Stewing Food: What’s for Dinner?

Stewing may be a slow cooking method but may be worth the wait if you get everything right. You'll be sure of an aromatic, mouth-watering meal of beef mixed with vegetables and other ingredients if you grasp these simple basics of stewing.

1. Start by cutting and dredging

For the best results, be sure to cut your beef into cubes of about one inch square regardless of whether you're using your own cuts or pre-packaged cubes. Before you can proceed to brown them, dredge the beef in seasoned flour.

2. Brown the beef

The next step is to brown the meat on all sides over medium heat in a drizzle of oil. If using a smaller pan, or if preparing larger meals, you can do the browning in batches. Transfer it over if using a slow cooker.

3. Add everything else

It's now time to take a look at your recipe. When all the cubes turn a delicious brown, add everything else as per your recipe. This could include vegetables, seasonings, and liquid, which may include beef broth or even water. Once the liquid begins to boil, reduce the heat and cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid.

4. Now simmer and stew

Allow the stuff to simmer and stew – don't lift the lid unless you need to add more vegetables, or anything else later. Also, follow your recipe for guidelines on timing. Generally, if the ingredients you want to add are already cooked, such as rice, potatoes, and beans, introduce them to the stew in the last minutes of cooking time to allow them to reheat.
