Accidentally Over-Season While Preparing Food?

Food Holding Equipment

When it comes to adding seasoning to your dishes, there are two types of people: those who measure carefully with cups and teaspoons and those who measure with their hearts. Whatever your habit, you're bound to make a mistake with your seasonings once in a while.

When that happens, do not despair. All is not lost. If you keep your wits about you, you can likely salvage your meal by taking one of these steps.

When You Over-Season a Dish

First, consider your best option. As the experts at Food52 remind us, some instances of overseasoning call for balancing the flavors (say, by adding oil or lemon zest) and some call for dilution. Rather than making the first panicked move that occurs to you, take a few minutes to research your best option. Then proceed accordingly.

Second, seek an informed perspective. While you certainly can learn from your own mistakes, you can also benefit from the lessons others have already learned. If you have time and the ability to do so, quickly consult with another cook as to which option might work best in your case.  Your colleagues likely have a wealth of experience to share if you're willing to ask.

Third, approach with care and whimsy. When attempting to recover from one mistake, you want to take care not to follow a bad decision with a worse one. We understand. However, while you should certainly exercise caution, don't be afraid to take the chance to mix it up and try something new, inventive, and fun.
