Stewing Food Keeps Your Kitchen Warm and Fragrant All Winter Long

Depending where you live in North America, the chill of hardcore winter may not have settled in quite yet. Then again, maybe it has. With the holidays over and the dreariest stretch of winter rolling in over most of us, the time has come to consider how to keep ourselves warm and snug during the long, dark months to come. Here are some tips for keeping your kitchen warm and fragrant all winter long.

One way to keep at least our kitchens warm and fragrant is to consider stewing foods. One reason that stewed foods is a good for this is due to the nature of the ingredients involved.

Stewing uses small, uniform pieces of beef pot roast or beef for stew meat that are totally immersed in liquid (The Kitchn).

These savory meats (or vegetables)—when cooked in broth with the added bonus of onion, sage, garlic, or other fragrant herbs—are completely tenderized as they slowly cook to moist, juicy perfection. Better yet, they keep your kitchen warm and fragrant for hours, driving back the gloom of winter chill.

If you are new to stewing food, do not despair. It takes only a few clicks of the mouse to open yourself to a wide variety of recipes and ideas. We recommend starting either with these offerings from Food and Wine or these from Fine Cooking.

No matter which recipe you choose, remember to institute a plan to keep your food warm and delicious from the moment it has finished cooking until the moment you are ready to serve.
